I know my blog is generally a riding blog. But I can assure you that our sabbatical in the USA over Christmas involved nothing of the cycling variety. There was some California beach cruiser action, but nothing more than 5MPH or any type of sweat of course.
We are back on home soil now and what a festive season it was. Hens and bucks nights, wedding and reception, Christmas Eve, Christmas and then wedding reception number two! Two weeks in San Diego and a week in Chicago. It was really lovely to spend such a solid chunk of time with family, especially those new to the family, and others we hardly ever get to see.
However, weeks of sunset beers, Mexican food, orange cheese, chicken wings, deep dish pizza coffee cake and ice-cream sandwiches caught up with us and Seb and I returned rather on the porky side. And just to make sure we really felt it, I guarantee Americans have never used the two words portion and control in the same sentence!!
On half-price day Seb tried to beat the family record at Dirty Birds. He smashed it and managed 27 chicken wings in one sitting. We spoke to the all-time shop record holder who did 56 in 30 mins. The key? Plain and dry flavours, we went too hard on the saucy stuff apparently!
In the end it might have been better to stop eating all together! One day I received a salad mountain. So much for the healthy option…
Even the panda at San Diego Zoo is 15kg heavier than they usually are in the wild, apparently due to such tender love and care. Not even bamboo could save us!
There was a lot of drinking too. Everything Mexican is washed down with Tequila or a Margarita, everything else is followed by a Bud Light.
In Chicago it was between -17 and -20°C so everything was about being warm and cheesy. We tried our first deep dish pizza and experienced the legendary Lou Mitchell’s restaurant at the start of Route 66.
Finishing on a good note, wedding tux strawberries. Now I have six weeks to be able to fit into my own wedding dress. Eeeeeeek! Boot camp January has begun and it HURTS!
